This is was a historic day for Serbia. Formerly they were part of the former Yugoslavia and most recently under Serbia-Montenegro. Today was the first time Serbia appeared under the Serbian banner. Serbia starts this tournament with high expectations.
Ghana is one of the African teams that is also expected to do well in this tournament and is expected to carry the African banner. Ghana was the only African team during World Cup 2010 that moved beyond the group stage. You can rest assured that Germany will be watching these two teams closely.Both teams could spoilers for the favourites in this tournament.
The opening match of Group D started with a slight advantage for Ghana. Both teams played superbly, with equal chances, on either side. The first half was exciting with little more deliberate play by the Serbs, while Ghana broke out of the middle faster, with skilled individual play and passing. The Serb defence was very solid in the first half.
While the second half was exciting, Ghana had a slight advantage. A possible game changer occurred in the 74th minute when Nikola Lukovic was send off for his second yellow card on a tactical foul. Lukovic certainly thought it was not deserved. Despite being shorthanded Serbia maintained the pressure, while closing up its defence. Zigic will be out of the match in the next game against Germany.
Zddravko Kuzmanovic was nailed for a handball and in the and Ghana was given a penalty kick which was converted by Asamoah Gyan into the first ever World Cup goal for Ghana.v
