AT&T received tons of online preorders for the iPhone 4 and announced on Wednesday June 16, 2010, that they will stop taking iPhone 4 preorders. On Tuesday AT&T and Apple received over 600,000 orders on Tuesday which depleted their inventory.
When the iPhone 3G came out, preorders were ten times less. AT&T also set another record: 13 million customers came to their website to see if they qualified for a free upgrade to a new phone. This is 3x AT&T's previous record!
AT&T (T 25.44, -0.10, -0.38%) AND Apple (AAPL 266.32, +6.63, +2.56%) have experienced severe delays to their websites because of this.
Apple came out with a statement that partially said:
"We apologize to everyone who encountered difficulties, and hope that
they will try again or visit an Apple or carrier store once the iPhone
4 is in stock."
Customers eventually gave up when they could not get through to the websites. It resulted in several site upgrades on both sites to better help customers in the future. You think you see people carrying around a lot of iPhones now! You just wait....everyone will have them pretty soon!
iPhone 4.0 is set to be in stores on June 24th, 2010.
