CHILE EARTHQUAKE: 8.8 Magnitude Quake Hits Chile

Chile Earthquake
Tsunami warnings -- Warnings from the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.
Earlier this morning, Chile's president confirmed that six people were killed. Reuters:

President Michelle Bachelet said six people were killed and that more deaths were possible. Telephone and power lines were down, making a quick assessment of the

damage difficult in the early morning darkness.nternational reports that the earthquake has generated a Tsunami. Warnings have been issued for Chile and Peru. A tsunami watch has been issued for Ecuador, Colombia, Panama, Costa Rica and Antarctica.A massive 8.8-magnitude earthquake capable of tremendous damage struck central Chile early Saturday, shaking the capital for a minute and a half and setting off a tsunami. Buildings collapsed and phone lines and electricity were down, making the extent of the damage difficult to determine.

The quake hit 200 miles (325 kilometers) southwest of the capital, Santiago, at a depth of 22 miles (35 kilometers) at 3:34 a.m. (0634 GMT; 1:34 a.m. EST), the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

The epicenter was just 70 miles (115 kilometers) from Concepcion, Chile's second-largest city, where more than 200,000 people live along the Bio Bio river, and 60 miles from the ski town of Chillan, a gateway to Andean ski resorts that was destroyed in a 1939 earthquake.

An Associated Press Television News cameraman said some buildings collapsed in Santiago and power was out in parts of the city. Phone lines were either down or busy, making confirmation of damage difficult elsewhere, especially further south toward the epicenter. The quake was felt in Argentina as well.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a warning for Chile and Peru, and a less-urgent tsunami watch for Ecuador, Colombia, Panama, Costa Rica and Antarctica.

"Sea level readings indicate a tsunami was generated. It may have been destructive along coasts near the earthquake epicenter and could also be a threat to more distant coasts," the center said.

The U.S. west coast tsunami warning center said it did not expect a tsunami along the west of the U.S. or Canada but was continuing to monitor the situation.

The largest earthquake ever recorded struck the same area of Chile on May 22, 1960. The magnitude-9.5 quake killed 1,655 people and left 2 million homeless. The tsunami that it caused killed people in Hawaii, Japan and the Philippines and caused damage to the west coast of the United States.

USA Vs Finland 2010 Semifinal Becomes USA Rout

Kelli Stack
The USA vs Finland 2010 semifinal brought a lot of anticipation and dread. But the USA vs Finland 2010 match pretty much erased all doubt within 12 minutes. If anyone

feared that the Americans would look past Finland, with a potential rematch against Canada looming, they were answered quickly. If anyone thought that the U.S. was due

for a letdown, they will have to keep thinking that until Sunday. After a 6-1 thumping, the USA vs Finland 2010 semi is one of the final steps towards an America-Canada final.
As soon as America and Canada won their quarterfinal matches, everyone started dreaming that they would meet for the gold. However, they still had one more game to play before then, and the Americans didn't have a pushover in the semis. Finland got to the gold medal game in 2006, and is a frequent contender - yet they didn't look like it on this day.

13 minutes in, the USA vs Finland 2010 game was very much over. Although the Americans only had two goals against Switzerland, despite more than 40 shots, they scored three times that before the first period ended. Mikka Kiprusoff gave up four goals on seven shots before getting pulled, and then Finland gave up two more goals for good measure.

Patrick Kane led the way with two goals, while eight Americans got at least one point. While the U.S. had a balanced offensive attack, Ryan Miller got to take it easy for the second game in a row. But after having an easy time against the Swiss and the Fins, Miller may face the fire once again if Canada is next.

After the USA vs Finland 2010 semifinal, everyone now deems it inevitable that their next opponent will be Canada. At the least, if the Canadians do advance, they won't be as heavy a favorite after the impressive American victory.

Olympics Ice Hockey 2010 | USA VS Finland Live Stream – A lot of experts are saying the US will not make the finals and doubt the American’s winning streak will last. USA will face Finland in the first men’s ice hockey semifinals game of the 2010 Winter Olympics.

Few expected the US to make it this far in the tournament. It has been 30 years since the Americans won the men’s ice hockey gold.

“We have a very difficult game against Finland,” goalie Ryan Miller said. “They are very fast, they’re very well organized. I don’t think we got this far by looking ahead. We’ve always focused on that one game we needed. This will be a bigger test for our locker room to see if we can keep our heads in the right spot.”
Finland prefers to sit back and try to capitalize on mistakes. With physical players on a smaller, NHL-sized rink, the Finns might look to play a closer-checking game similar to the Americans’ approach.
A potent power play that has produced seven goals in four games has helped Finland make a repeat trip to the Olympic medal round.
“They’re a patient team. Probably a little more experienced and talented than the Swiss,” Orpik said. “The key is not take as many penalties as some of the other teams. That has been one of our strong suits, being disciplined.”

USA vs Finland 2010 - USA Finland hockey game final

http://www.finlandforthought.net/wp-content/finland_us_hockey.jpg
After what many called a miraculous win against Team Canada, Team USA has continued its Cinderella story performance in the 2010 Winter Olympics. In today's men's

hockey game of USA vs. Finland, the United States won almost too easily. The USA vs Finland 2010 Olympics game featured an impressive six goals scored by the Americans in just the first period for the rout of Team Finland. The final score, 6-1 in favor of Team USA. Patrick Kane scored 2 in the win, while Zach Parise, Paul

Statsny, Erik Johnson and Ryan Malone each added a goal as well. Antti Miettinen scored one goal in Finland's losing effort. The USA Finland hockey game outcome produced chants of "We want Canada" after the win.

With today's big victory, Team USA improves their Winter games record to 5-0, and now heads into the gold medal game on Sunday. They will face either Slovakia or Team Canada, the team they upset about a week ago to start this momentum. The last time the US captured gold was back in 1980. That event is now known as the famous "Miracle on Ice" which took place in Lake Placid, New York. However, Canada defeated Team USA in 2002 for the gold medal when the games took place in Utah.

While the United States is guaranteed at least a silver medal, Finland will play for the bronze, facing the loser of Canada vs. Slovakia on Saturday. Team USA will await the winner for a game scheduled to start at 12:15 PM on NBC Sunday. As for today's USA vs Finlay hockey 2010 game you can watch highlights of today's game

What's Your Political Label? Glenn Beck's Nolan Chart Political Pop Quiz

http://www.charmaineyoest.com/uploads/glenn_beck_cnn_yoest.jpg
People throw around a bunch of political labels. Progressive vs. Liberal, Conservative vs. Libertarian. Do you know where you fall?

Well Glenn Beck, the controversial political commentator, seems to think most people don't. That's why he is challenging people to take a political pop quiz of sorts.

The quiz is called the Nolan Chart survey, a group of ten questions which are supposed to gauge your political bent.

It's a quick quiz, so it may behoove you to check it out, even if just for kicks. But be warned, ever since Glenn Beck mentioned the Nolan Chart Survey, the website

has been very hard to log on to.I was riding an exercise bike at the gym, and saw it up on one of the screens. I started pointing and grunting loudly. No one noticed, though, because I often do this.

Selena Gomez: NAACP Image Awards Stunner

Stepping out for an evening on the red carpet, Selena Gomez turned up at the 2010 NAACP Image Awards in Los Angeles on Friday (February 26).

Drawing quite the ovation as she strolled into The Shrine Auditorium, the Disney darling smiled as she posed for pictures ahead of the swanky ceremony.

During the course of the evening, Miss Gomez, 17, finds herself among the nominees - as she’s

up for Outstanding Performance in a Youth/Children’s Program.

Joining Selena in the highly competitive category are Nick Cannon, Keke Palmer, LaShawn Jefferies and Caitlin Sanchez.

Canada’s Hamelin Wins Men’s 500 m with Confusing Finish

VANCOUVER, Canada—On the last night of short track speed skating on Friday, Canada’s Charles Hamelin took a last minute, or rather, last second lead in men’s 500 m short track speed skating at Pacific Coliseum with 40.981 seconds.

Hamelin, the 25-year-old reigning world champion, set an Olympic record in his quarterfinal heat earlier in the evening with 40.770.

South Korea’s Sung Si-Bak took the silver medal with 41.340 and Hamelin’s teammate Francois-Louis Tremblay took bronze with 46.366. America’s Apolo Ohno, who was America’s medal contender, was disqualified for impeding Tremblay.

Although Ohno, the most decorated racer of the evening, benefitted from good fortune and dexterity in his earlier two heats as skaters ahead of him tangled and crashed, Ohno had a bad start in the final round, lying last among the four skaters.
At the last corner before the finish line, Ohno tried to cut inside Tremblay, probably resting his hand on the Canadian skater, causing him to fall as Ohno went ahead. Hamelin successfully overtook Sung, who fell right away. Hamelin crossed the finish line while losing his balance a little. He may have had a hand on Sung when he passed him.

Apolo Ohno Wins Another Medal

ohno0226
American Apolo Anton Ohno broke his own record Winter Olympic medal haul on Friday night, as part of the team that won the bronze medal in the 5,000 meter short track relay. It's Mr. Ohno's third medal of the Vancouver Games, and the eighth of his

career, making him the most decorated American Winter Olympian ever.Canada took the gold in a clean race that had five teams on the track simultaneously. Korea won

silver. Less than 0.3 seconds separated the first and third. The U.S. was a dark horse in the race, since Mr. Ohno had long been considered the team's only

world-class skater. But Mr. Ohno was helped in the relay by the emergence of a young new American star, J.R. Celski."Our men's team has been absolutely fired up from the beginning," said Mr. Ohno, as he waited for the medal ceremony. "We came here to perform today, and we did."With his medal haul, the 27-year-old Mr. Ohno proved he was not too old to compete seriously at these Games. Earlier on Friday, he nearly came in second in the 500 meter race, but was disqualified after a pile up in the final milliseconds of the race."I'm in the best shape of my life. I feel the best I've ever skated," he said. These Games may mark the end of the road for Mr. Ohno's speed skating career, but he wasn't ready following the relay to discuss what's next. "I'm not thinking anything past tomorrow," he said.

Disqualified in 500, Ohno Wins 8th in Relay

VANCOUVER, British Columbia — For the first two weeks of these Winter Olympics, Apolo Ohno evaded crashes and made late charges and won two medals in his first two

short track speedskating races. His fortunes changed Friday night, in the 500 meters, where Ohno artfully advanced to the final, at one point even balancing on one skate. In the final, where he aimed for his eighth career Olympic medal, Ohno

crossed the finish line in second place, but was disqualified upon review.
All four speedskaters in the final entered the final turn in a tight pack. Ohno appeared to tangle with Francois-Louis Tremblay of Canada, who fell but wound up receiving the bronze. The gold went to his countryman, Charles Hamelin, and the silver was awarded to Sung Si-Bak of South Korea, who also fell.
“I was looking for space,” Ohno said afterward. “There was none.”

What was almost certainly Ohno’s last hurrah in an individual event took place in the same city that his speedskating career started, not far from Seattle, his hometown. He finished what is likely his last Winter Olympics heavy on medals — two gold, two silver, four bronze, a career record for an American in the Winter Games — after the United States took third in the 5,000-meter relay.
Ohno has long defined himself as an Olympian, but instead of medals, he measured his career by moments. Like crawling across the finish line in Salt Lake City in 2002, blood dripping from his thigh. Like his previous 500-meter race in the Olympics, a perfectly run contest that resulted in a delicious gold in Turin in 2006.
Yuki Ohno, Apolo’s father, projected serenity in a text message Friday morning. He described the mood in the Ohno camp as calm and peaceful. Ohno went one step further on his Twitter page.

“It’s time,” he posted. “Heart of a lion. I will give my all — heart, mind & spirit today. This is what it’s about! All the way until the end! No regrets.”

Ohno has not officially announced his retirement from speedskating, but all the signs are there. His teammate, the 18-year-old speedskater Simon Cho, posted on Thursday on Twitter about Ohno’s “final” practice. The message mysteriously disappeared. His United States coach, Jae Su Chun, talked about the difficulty the program faces in replacing Ohno.
But there are speedskaters in America’s future. Katherine Reutter won the silver medal in the women’s 1,000 meters. At 21, she is part of the post-Ohno program.
Ohno mulled retirement after Turin, as he signed with a Hollywood talent agency, made forays into acting and won “Dancing With the Stars.” But the perfect race — the elation and emotion provided by that moment — brought him back. Back to the Olympics and Vancouver, his career circle nearing its completion.
Ohno entered these Olympics finely tuned, 15 pounds lighter than in Turin, but more explosive, fueled by testosterone. His trainer, John Schaeffer, said Ohno’s progress, especially in the final 16 weeks, should be captured in a book as a guide for proper training.

Winter Olympics action blows hot and cold in summer

http://cdn.bleacherreport.com/images_root/users/photos/000/043/333/tam_bradford_profile_page.jpg
I can't help but feel both globally warmed and warned by coverage of the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics (Prime TV), when it's scorching hot outside and the cat approaches with a razor in his paws demanding a complete body shave.

The trouble with most events in the glacial Winter Olympic Games is the necessity for competitors to wear some kind of safety mask. This deprives the viewer of witnessing all the Sturm und Drang flitting across the athletes' faces, which is why I opt for the ice-skating rink every time.

So it was with eagerness that I tuned into the highlights of the big finish of the pairs skating - the free dance won by Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean, that most famous of icy salt-and-pepper shakers of all time, 26 years ago in Sarajevo, when

they turned in a perfect score. Gosh, was it that long ago?
Yes, according to Prime host Eric Young, who quietly gets on with the business of doing a Quinnie, supplying us with all the statitics and relevant gossip, such as that the South Korean ice-skating sensation wee Kim Yu Na made more than $12 million last year.

Having sat through the compulsory section and been completely underwhelmed by the churning out of standard nuts and bolts moves, what fun and freedom to arrive at last at the free event, won very convincingly this year by Canadian sensations, the aptly named Tessa Virtue and her partner, Scott Moir.
It very much helped that the pair looked like two peas out of the same pod, blessed with similar peaches- and-cream colouring, delicate features and charcoal-coloured hair.
Now, we wouldn't have copped any of that very human detail had their dials been covered in masks, would we?
So many of the skating male competitors seem to have bizarre reptilian facial features that make them look like Mick Jagger crossed with Michael York, and a bit of gone- wrong plastic surgery thrown in for good measure. Not so Moir, who was so sweet of feature that he looked as if he had just stepped out of the stalls of the Vienna Boys' Choir.

Virtue was boyishly flat-chested. However, her choice of costume was outstanding and she resembled a lick of mercury crossed with diamonds in white and silver, as her flesh-coloured skates matched her partner's footwork with breathless timing. After the performance, they replayed the pairs' natty turns in mind-boggling slow motion as they kept Greenwich Mean Time with perfect foot and hip alignment.
Skirt length is terribly important. Many an athletic lift by the man, hoisting his partner sky high and wrapping her around his neck as effortlessly as if she were a giant scarf, can look terribly silly if his face is suddenly obliterated by a panel of skirt as the duo are launched full sail across the ice.

Police say ‘Growing Pains’ actor Koenig found dead

Former “Growing Pains” actor Andrew Koenig was found dead Thursday in a wooded area of a sprawling downtown park where he enjoyed spending time, apparently after

committing suicide.
The actor’s father, Walter Koenig, said “my son took his own life,” and police spokeswoman Jana McGuinness said, “I’ll let Mr. Koenig’s words speak for themselves.”

McGuinness, speaking at a press conference at the park, said foul play was not involved, but said she ould not be more specific because the coroner was taking over the investigation.
“He was obviously in a lot of pain,” Walter Koenig said, referring his son’s depression.
Andw Koenig, 41, had a recurring role on the 1980s sitcom as Richard “Boner” Stabone, a pal of star Kirk Cameron’s character, Mike. The native of Venice, California, hadn’t been seen since Feb. 14, when he was visiting friends in Vancouver.
He was supposed to return home two days later. His parents reported him missing Feb. 18, then asked the public for help finding him a few days later.

On Tuesday, Vancouver police and three search-and-rescue teams looked for any signs of Koenig throughout Stanley Park, which covers more than 1,000 acres (400 hectares). Friends and family decided to try again on their own Thursday and one of them found Koenig’s body near a marsh in a heavily wooded area about 100 feet (30 meters) off the Bridle Path. McGuinness said the body could not be seen from the walking path.
The elder Koenig, who played Pavel Chekov on the original “Star Trek” TV series, was nearby when the body was found. Hours later, Koenig and his wife, Judith, issued a statement at a police station in the park.
They said Andrew had been depressed and urged others who are having trouble coping to seek help. Earlier they had said that he had seemed detached to his friends and had given away his belongings.
“If you are one of those people who can’t handle it any more, know people are out there who really care before you make that final decision,” Walter Koenig said. “Talk to somebody.”
Andrew Koenig also appeared in “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine,” and the films “My Two Dads,” “NonSeNse,” “InAlienable” and “The Theory of Everything.” His father had praised his son for his acting, film editing and directing work, and said he was also a busy environmental activist. He also was an advocate for refugees from Myanmar, formerly known as Burma.

‘Growing Pains’ actor found dead

The body of actor Andrew Koenig, 41, was found in Stanley Park in Vancouver, B.C., on Thursday, said his father, Walter Koenig.

Walter Koenig, best known for playing Pavel Chekov on the original “Star Trek” TV series, said his son took his own life. Walter Koenig was with the search group that discovered his son’s body.

“Andrew had some very close friends here in Vancouver; he really felt this was home,” said Walter Koenig of son Andrew, who played Boner, friend to Kirk Cameron’s character on the 1980s sitcom “Growing Pains.”

The Koenigs said they received a letter from Andrew last week in which he wrote in a “despondent tone.” Walter Koenig said Andrew stopped taking antidepressant medication a year ago.
“He was obviously in a lot of pain,” he said.
Jana McGuinness, a Vancouver police spokeswoman, said Koenig’s body was found off a bridle path in a densely wooded area. She wouldn’t confirm the cause of death except to say foul play was not suspected and weapons were not involved.
Koenig, of Venice, Calif., had been visiting friends when he went missing Feb. 14. Besides “Growing Pains,” he also acted in “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine,” “G.I. Joe,” “My Two Dads,” and “21 Jump Street.”

Rumors follow tour
Although video postings of her recent shows in Australia have been less than flattering, Whitney Houston says her tour is going great – and she’s in great health.
A statement Thursday from Houston’s publicist, Kristen Foster, says: “Whitney is in great health and having a terrific time on her tour and with her fans,” who are dancing and singing along to her performances, she said.
That view contrasts news reports quoting disgruntled fans who have complained about the star’s voice and performance. Video snippets of Houston struggling to hit notes in concerts in Sydney and Brisbane have circulated widely on YouTube.

Son denied bail

Michael Douglas’ troubled son, Cameron, was denied bail and a chance for outpatient addiction treatment Thursday as he awaits sentencing in a federal drug-dealing case.

The screen scion said nothing during the hearing at a Manhattan federal court. He greeted his mother, Diandra, and other supporters as he was taken back to jail. His father didn’t attend.

Douglas, 31, pleaded guilty in January to selling large amounts of methamphetamine and cocaine out of a trendy Manhattan hotel. He faces a minimum 10-year prison term at sentencing April 14.

American Idol results show recap, semifinals top 24 to 20c

First out: Janell Wheeler, the sweet wine rep. She is not a bad singer. While she wasn’t even in the neighborhood of Carly Smithson singing Heart, she held her own.

In fact, I thought she was middle of the pack, not someone who would get axed.
Second gal gone: Ashley Rodriguez had some early appeal with the “Idol” producers and judges but she went big and failed big with a relatively obscure Leona Lewis
http://i28.tinypic.com/2ywcsbq.jpg
song Tuesday. Her verses aren’t bad but her chorus and runs were still horrible, post-elimination. Her end note was better than Tuesday, at least.
First guy ousted: Joe Munoz, who was ignored by ‘Idol” producers until last night. He wasn’t half bad but I guess he didn’t leave enough of an impression either. I feel bad for the guy. I could see some potential there.
Second guy done: Tyler Grady. He was the ’70s rocker wannabe with not a scintilla of genuineness to him. And then he threw the judges under the bus after getting eliminated, saying they didn’t give him enough constructive criticism during Hollywood week.
My predictions were Tim Urban, Paige Miles, Lacey Brown and Tyler. I only got one out of four right.
I’m going to miss Joe and Janelle. Both certainly deserved another shot over other contestants.
There were 24 million votes cast last night. I’d have to check if that’s much different from a year ago but it’s hard to compare because they were using the top 36 set up. I doubt it’s a record for the semifinals, else Ryan would have said so.
Allison Iraheta, who is signed to 19 Entertainment, got to sing “Scars,” her latest single. I’m not sure if it’s going to do well since her first single stiffed, but you never know. I’m rooting for her. She was a great singer from day one and clearly has a future.
Kris Allen talked about Haiti and did a cover of “Let It Be,” reminding us a bit why we voted for him.
The group sing used a song heard during Hollywood week: Estelle’s fetching “American Boy.” But it sounded lip synced and nobody sang a solo. It was just harmonies galore. Good harmonies, for sure, but I would prefer to hear some solo lines.

'American Idol' results: Who goes home?

http://thetvaddict.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/03/american_idol_results.jpg
As American Idol opens, we learn that 24 million votes were cast and we're reminded that four people are going home.
Ryan Seacrest asks Simon Cowell about "the buzz of the nation" that Simon was harsher than usual this week. Um, Ryan, it's because a lot of the performances were bad.

According to your votes on the poll on last night's recap, you think Tim Urban and John Park are in trouble, and voters on the poll from Tuesday night think Haeley Vaughn and Lacey Brown are most likely to go home. We'll see if you're right pretty soon.

But first, there's the group sing of "American Boy. And by group sing, I mean group lip sync.

After a break, some results. Siobhan Magnus is safe. Haeley Vaughn is, surprisingly, safe. Well, I guess realizing that she got a lot of back-story time, maybe it's not that big of a surprise. Michelle Delamor is safe, too. Katelyn Epperly is as well, leaving Katie Stevens and Janell Wheeler the last two standing in their row, and one of them is out.
And that person is Janell. I think she really sabotaged herself by interviewing so many times during Hollywood Week about how she had screwed up. That made her look like she lacked confidence, and it didn't play out well. Anyway, she gives her final performance, reprising Heart's "What About Love." She sounds better tonight than Tuesday.
Next, Allison Iraheta and her giant red and purple wig come out to perform their new song, "Scars." She sounds good, but I don't understand why they have her going the ballad route instead of something rockier. She asks Ryan if they should have an awkward interview now, and then they do.

More results. Paige Miles is safe, Lacey Brown is, too. (So we're 0-for-2 on the women so far.) Lilly Scott is safe, as is Crystal Bowersox. This leaves Ashley Rodriguez and Didi Benami. Didi stays, and Ashley goes. She reprises "Happy," even though she's not.
Before the guys' results, we get to see a clip from rehearsal last night, in which Tyler Grady performed in boots, socks and a bathrobe. He says he showed up in his robe to be comfortable before they had to get ready, and then there was some confusion about the order of things. He thought he was going to wardrobe, but he was going to rehearsal. So bathrobe it was. If you think he looked funny working all the usual 70s rocker poses last night, well, it was even funnier in a robe and boots.
Michael Lynche is safe, John Park is too. Aaron Kelly? Safe. Todrick Hall is as well. This leaves Tim Urban and Joe Munoz. Tim is actually safe, and Joe Munoz is out. Tim is shocked. Joe reprises his performance.
Then Kris Allen returns to the stage (from last season ... not earlier this week). He performs "Let It Be" after talking with Ryan about Idol Gives Back's efforts in Haiti.
Back to the last of the results. Casey James = safe. Jermaine Sellers also safe. Lee Dewyze is too. Andrew Garcia joins the seated safe folks. This leaves Alex Lambert and Tyler Grady standing in the center of the stage. Alex is safe, and Tyler is cut. (Speaking of cut, the audio cuts out right then.) Anyway, Tyler tells Ryan that he feels like he didn't get much constructive criticism during Hollywood Week, so what they told him last night came too late. Sounds kind of whiny, but he might have a bit of a point.

Carrie Underwood’s Super Bowl Outfit: Touchdown or Fumble?

When Carrie Underwood hit the stage at last night’s Super Bowl to belt out the National Anthem, we were as focused on her wardrobe as her hitting the high notes. The newly-engaged star continued her streak of choosing all-white — hey, she has a wedding on her mind! — by pairing a Rock & Republic jacket with PRVCY Premium skinny white jeans and a matching platform pumps. While the blonde beauty certainly stood out, her totally color-coordinated outfit raised a few fashionistas’ eyebrows. We want to know what you think! Vote in our poll below.

The live version was released as a single and went to No. 1 on both the Billboard magazine Hot Country Singles and Billboard Hot 100 charts. The song topped both charts for one week each, first the country chart (on May 31), and the Hot 100 chart a week later.

Bloom Box : Bloom Energy Fuel Cell Boxes Discussed Latest Video

The Bloom energy Fuel Cell Boxes are the device of the future being made to help provide a clean energy source. Bloom Energy Fuel Cell Boxes are going to be debuted in two days according to their website.

With the clean energy global initiative being one of the most focused on in the world, these boxes are said to be able to run clean and inexpensively. Major companies are said to be involved in the experimental testing including Google and Ebay.

The Future Of Energy? Bloom Energy Boxes Already Power Google, eBay, Others :-

Over the past several years, there’s been no shortage of talk about alternative energy, and its potential to change the world. The problem is that most of it is just that — talk. But tonight, a report that aired on 60 Minutes showed one alternative that is not only real, it’s already being tested by companies such as Google and eBay. You simply have to watch this.

Bloom Energy are producing tiny fuel cell boxes they call “Bloom Boxes.” Two of these can apparently power a U.S. home (and only one for homes in countries that use less power). So how small are they? Look at the picture above, each device isn’t much bigger than a standard brick. Of course, they need to be surrounded by a larger unit that takes in an energy source (such as natural gas). But still, these units look to be about the size of a refrigerator and can easily fit outside of a home, providing it with clean, cheap energy.

Currently, these boxes cost some $700,000-$800,000, but eventually, founder K.R. Sridhar envisions one in every home — and he thinks he can get the cost below $3,000 for a unit to make that happen. And he’s talking a 5 to 10 year timeframe for this.

Naturally, there are plenty who are skeptical of something like this ever working. There have been no shortage of fuel cell ideas over the years, but none get their own segment on 60 Minutes showing working units. And none get to highlight the fact that they’re already installed at companies like Google, eBay, FedEx and others. In fact, four of these Bloom Boxes have apparently been powering a Google datacenter for the past 18 months. eBay says their five boxes have saved them over $100,000 in electricity costs over the past nine months.

Bloom Energy also has former Secretary of State Colin Powell on its board of directors, and he talked up the Bloom Boxes on 60 minutes tonight also. And the company has something in the neighborhood of $400 million in funding from the likes of Kleiner Perkins and others. Kleiner’s John Doerr is also featured heavily in the 60 Minutes segment, talking about why he thinks this company can change the world perhaps even in a more profound way that another company he backed, Google, has. Bloom Energy was Kleiner’s first green tech investment.

Again, just watch the video and decide for yourself whether to be skeptical or amazed at this point. Right now, I’m definitely in the latter camp considering this thing is already being tested out. Apparently, Bloom Energy is due for a big formal public unveiling on Wednesday in San Jose (they have a countdown up on their site) —expect to hear a lot more then.

The Bloom Box: What All the Fuss Is About Watch Full Video

This is secretive fuel cell company Bloom Energy’s big week. Tonight 60 Minutes aired an exclusive look inside the Bloom Box, and on Wednesday the company is officially launching, after operating for 8 years and having reportedly raised around $400 million from investors like Kleiner Perkins.

Watch the video clips, embedded below, to see what the Bloom Box actually looks like — kindof like an industrial-sized refrigerator, that sucks up oxygen on one side and fuel (natural gas, biomass, etc) on the other. 60 Minute’s reporter Lesley Stahl takes a look at the “secret sauce” behind the Bloom Box, and reports that Bloom bakes sand and cuts it into little squares that are turned into a ceramic, which are then coated with green and black “inks.” Using a special process Bloom creates these ceramic discs and stacks them together interspersed with metal plates of “a cheap metal alloy.” The bigger the stack the more power the Bloom Box will create.

For those of you less familiar with fuel cells, they’re like a chemical battery, which combines solutions to create a chemical reaction that delivers electricity. Fuel cells have been under development by hundreds of manufacturers in the consumer electronics and auto industries for decades, but have remained too expensive and have been unable to break into the mainstream. It will be a very difficult road for Bloom, and Fortune reports that Bloom Energy lost $85 million in 2008, “according to venture capitalists that have seen its business plan.”

Stahl dug up some interesting tidbits beyond being the first reporter to get a glimpse of the device. Like the fact that Bloom Energy CEO K.R. Sridhar originally came up with the idea for the Bloom Box after developing a device for NASA that would be able to create oxygen on Mars. After NASA ditched their Mars mission, Sridhar had the idea to reverse the oxygen-creating Mars box and use oxygen as the input instead.

Stahl also reports that a Google datacenter has been using 4 Bloom Boxes for the past 18 months. Google was Bloom’s first customer and while Google’s Bloom boxes use natural gas, they use “about half as much as would be required for a traditional power plant,” reports Stahl.

Now that Bloom is starting to talk publicly, it’s also interesting to see how they are starting to market and position the Bloom boxes: as replacing the power grid. Here’s how 60 Minutes reports it:

The idea is to one day replace the big power plants and transmission line grid, the way the laptop moved in on the desktop and cell phones supplanted landlines.
