Shaun White Nails Double McTwist 1260 During Second Run, Securing the Gold
Shaun White's gold medal run is an amazing account of snowboarding excellence. Dubbed the "Flying Tomato" because of his fire-red hair, Olympic snowboarder Shaun White wowed the crowd once again.
Wowing people isn't something new to Shaun, as he revealed the Double McTwist 1260 during the X Games last month in Park City, Utah. The move is difficult, and even White himself can't land it 100% of the time.
During his first run in the Olympic event, fans were a little disappointed to see that the Flying Tomato didn't perform his trick. He says he wanted to take the pressure off his teammates.
Even though the snowboarder didn't do his famous move, his score sent him easily to the top. During his second run, he knew he had to put on a show for his fans and he nailed everything flawlessly.
So how does he do it? Shaun White is very laid back and relaxed. Prior to his Gold Medal run, he spent the day kayaking with friends. Where many competitors were likely practicing over and over again, he was relaxing his legs and enjoying life.
It's this type of attitude that a) makes people love him and b) relaxes him enough so that he's able to perform when necessary.
The day after his Olympic Gold Medal performance, everyone and their brother wants to see the Double McTwist 1260 video. You can find that video here. Shaun White created the move himself on a half million dollar half pipe in a secluded Colorado location that is only accessible by helicopter. Who paid for all this? Red Bull. (Which brings "Red Bull Gives You Wings" to a whole new level, doesn't it?)
White hasn't always been so lucky. During the X Games, he crashed during a practice run. Luckily, the error happened during training and practice and not the actual competition. Although the crash looked brutal, he was able to compete later on and nailed his performance dead on. See the X Games crash video here.
Shaun White brought the American Gold Medal Count up to 5, and helped bring Team USA from the #2 slot for total awards to the #1 slot for not only total awards, but Gold medals as well.
