The last time fans caught a glimpse of Cung Le was in December 2009. He was fighting MMA journeyman Scott Smith in a Strikeforce event at the HP Pavilion. Saturday night, it was “like deja vu all over again” as the Vietnamese kickboxer stood opposite Smith at “Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Werdum.”
Although Le only had a 6-1 professional mixed martial arts record entering his mulligan with Smith, most questioned if the 38-year-old was already staring at his better days in his rear-view mirror.
At least for one night, Le silenced his critics by dominating a relentless Smith to earn an impressive 2ndRound TKO victory. Le was accurate and dynamic with his striking, as he punished Smith throughout their scrap.
After avenging his 3rdRound TKO loss to Smith, Le was asked if a trilogy was warranted. Instead of playing matchmaker, Le deferred bout assigning duties to Strikeforce brass and said he’d do as he was told. However, Le utterly destroyed Smith on Saturday night so it is highly unlikely the powers that be would be interested in witnessing Part III.
