Jets deal for Antonio Cromartie
The New York Jets [team stats] reached an agreement in principle with the San Diego Chargers to acquire cornerback Antonio Cromartie.
The Jets confirmed the deal last night, but didn’t release specifics, although it is believed to include a 2011 draft pick going to the Chargers.
Cromartie was an All-Pro in 2007 and will team with Darrelle Revis in the Jets secondary, making them possibly the best tandem in the NFL.
Despite 15 interceptions in four seasons, the Chargers were dissatisfied with Cromartie’s performance late last season.
Cromartie replaces Lito Sheppard, who was released earlier in the day.
The Jets also placed a first- and third-round tender on wide receiver Braylon Edwards, and tendered seven other restricted free agents, including running back-kick returner Leon Washington [stats].
The Chargers tendered speedy Darren Sproles and released veteran defensive tackle Jamal Williams.
San Diego also tendered a group of veterans - outside linebacker Shawne Merriman, left tackle Marcus McNeill and wide receivers Malcom Floyd and Vincent Jackson.
Delhomme axed
The Carolina Panthers cut quarterback Jake Delhomme, just over a year after giving him a lucrative contract extension only to watch him have his worst season as a pro.
Agent Rick Smith confirmed the move late last night. The Panthers still owe the 35-year-old Delhomme about $12.5 million in guaranteed money.
Carolina also released veteran defensive tackle Damione Lewis. . . .
Indianapolis gave tender offers to safeties Melvin Bullitt and Antoine Bethea, and they’re also still hoping to work out a deal with defensive captain Gary Brackett. Brackett was not given the franchise or transition tags. . . .
The Miami Dolphins [team stats] placed tenders on three restricted free agents, running back Ronnie Brown, tight end Anthony Fasano and outside linebacker Quentin Moses.
