Days cut short a tiny bit cuz of chile earthquake earth axis
Very interesting. Andreas Rietbrock, a professor of Earth Sciences at Liverpool University in the U.K., talks with Bloomberg's Erik Schatzker about the impact of the
Chilean earthquake on the Earth's axis and length of day. The tremor, which measured 8.8 on the Richter scale and killed more than 700 people in Chile, probably shifted the Earth's axis and shortened the day, according to scientists. NASA explained that the key to the shift was due to the location of the quake, with the fault slicing
through Earth at a steeper angle, making “the Chile fault more effective in moving Earth’s mass vertically and hence more effective in shifting Earth’s figure axis.”
This is interesting stuff, but still....
but this isn't the end of the world as we know it. But if it did shift, what good or harm will this do to the earth?
Oh well, this shift will only shorten every day by only 1.26 microseconds. Thankfully no so bad!
