Groom dies in boat crash near Statue of Liberty just weeks before wedding

A groom dies in a boat crash yesterday near the Statue of Liberty. His wedding was just weeks away. Jijo Puthuvamkunnath, 30 was in the Bayliner anchored off Liberty Island. Puthuvamkunnath was just weeks away from marrying his fiance Sissy Chacko.

The crash left him trapped inside the boat. Police were not able to get him out of the boat because it was crashed in. Finally 6 officers were able to get him out of the boat. He was taken to Jersey City Medical Center, but was pronounced dead due to head injuries.

Richard Aquilone, 39, was driving the boat Reel Impulsive that crashed into the Bayliner. Aquilone had been drinking and he faces charges in the deadly crash. He failed the Breathalyzer test after the crash.

The other two victims in the crash were treated for injuries and they are in stable condition. The people in the boat that crashed into them are not injured.

What a horrible tragedy. Friends of Puthuvamkunnath say he was out celebrating July 4. It is just terrible that he died so near the Statue of Liberty on this holiday weekend.

It seems as if it could have been prevented as well if the other boater had not been drunk. It is a tough reminder to be especially careful over this holiday weekend especially when drinking. If you drink, do not drive anything except perhaps a golf ball.

I am so sorry for Puthuvamkunnath’s family and friends. This has to be horrible for his grieving fiance.
