Haiti earthquake update: a native Memphian who went to Haiti with the Woodmont Church in Nashville has returned to the United States safely. Trey Flowers gives his account of what happened during the 7.0 earthquake which rocked the small island of Hispaniola, demolishing the poor nation of Haiti in the video below.
Flowers says that when the Haitian earthquake hit, the group of missionaries was getting in to their van and were going to exchange some money. They hadn't gotten all the way in their van when it started to rock.
Some thought a bomb was going off, others thought that Haitians were rocking their van. Someone yelled "Earthquake!" and they got out of their van and started to run.
A cloud of dust hit them in the face. The three story building they were in just 10 seconds before the quake was demolished. The guest house that they were staying in was also completely demolished.
The native Memphian is among the lucky ones that get to leave the island. There are many Haitian natives that are stuck not knowing what to do. Aid is slow to arrive and the dead are being buried in mass graves.
The death toll is expected to reach at least 100,000. As many scramble to find out ways to help, many more are scrambling to find out how to survive.
