Haiti 7.3 Earthquake: Possibly Thousands Dead

A massive earthquake that measured 7.3 on the Richter scale, hit the Caribbean island of Haiti recently. Minor earthquakes are quite common in the Caribbean, but this latest one is said to be the strongest ever to have hit Haiti.

According to telegraph.co.uk, Haiti’s presidential palace collapsed after the quake, along with several other buildings in the country’s capital of Port-au-Prince. A hospital was also flattened in the tremor, with reports of people being buried under the rubble.

Karel Zelenka, who is a Catholic Relief Services rep in the capital, told US colleagues just before phone services went down, that thousands of people were feared dead. Survivors were seen trying to pull other people out of piles of concrete.

Joseph Guyler Delva, who is a Reuters’ reporter in the capital, said that he saw dozens of casualties, and people dead. A Haitian journalist told the Haitipal television station that the UN peacekeeping HQ was also destroyed, and staff members were missing.
