Commonwealth Games 2010: Delhi set for opening ceremony - FULL NEWS VIDEO

Games will officially start on Sunday with a spectacular opening ceremony at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Delhi.

The Games, the first to be staged in India, have been dogged by problems with the athletes' village being called "inhospitable" just last week.

However, Games officials have worked round the clock to ensure competitions start, as scheduled, on Monday.

Prince Charles will represent the Queen at the ceremony.

His exact role had been a source of confusion with local media reports claiming Indian President Pratibha Patil would officially open the Games.

But Clarence House, after emphasising that both would have roles in the ceremony, has confirmed the Prince will read out the Queen's baton message before declaring the Games open.

The exact details of what will happen during the opening ceremony are a closely guarded secret but BBC Sport's Gordon Farquhar has been to the dress rehearsal and said it will be a show that vibrates with the sounds and rhythms of India, majoring on the nation's culture and heritage rather than Bollywood glitz.

Workers rescued after Gulf oil rig explosion

A Gulf of Mexico oil rig exploded Thursday morning, sending its crew of 13 scrambling into the water 92 miles off the coast of Louisiana, the Coast Guard said.

An oil industry vessel that was nearby plucked the crewmembers out of the water and brought them to a nearby platform, Coast Guard Petty Officer Thomas Blue said. Coast Guard helicopters were in the process of flying them to a hospital. One of the workers suffered a minor injury, Blue said.

The crew had donned brightly colored survival gear known as "Gumby suits" that helped them float and made them more visible.

FULL COVERAGE: Tracking the oil spill

The explosion and rescue attempt were reminiscent of the April 20 explosion on the Deepwater Horizon rig, which was triggered by a blowout from a newly drilled oil reservoir. The resulting oil spill lasted nearly three months and became the nation's worst off-shore environmental disaster in history. Eleven workers died in that blast.

Thursday's fire was partially contained by a vessel sent to the scene by the platform's owner, Mariner Energy of Houston. Two more firefighting vessels were on the way, Blue said.

It was not clear whether Thursday's explosion was the result of a blowout or whether it had caused any leaks of crude oil, Coast Guard Commander Cheri Ben-Iesau said. The platform was not producing oil or gas because it was undergoing maintenance, according to the federal Bureau of Ocean Energy Management.

Mariner Energy's website describes itself as "one of the leading independent oil and gas exploration and production companies in the Gulf of Mexico."

The explosion was reported at 9:19 a.m. by another nearby rig. The blast occurred 92 miles south of Vermilion Bay, La., which is to the west of New Orleans and the Mississippi River Delta. It is also about 200 miles west of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.

The rescue was aided by decent weather, and Coast Guard helicopters had been able to locate the workers relatively quickly, Ben-Iesau said. Seven helicopters, two airplanes and four boats were dispatched to the site.

White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said the platform was not a deep water rig like the well that blew out in April. He said the water was about 340 feet deep. The Deepwater Horizon rig had drilled in water about 5,000 feet deep.

The situation appears to be very different than the one that hit BP, said Philip Weiss, an analyst at Argus Research. The rig was working in shallow water, and there are no signs yet of any spill. Still, he said offshore critics may still use it to argue against offshore drilling. Within minutes of the first reports of the explosion, that was happening.

"This is one other piece of evidence that demonstates the human and enviroment risks of our appetite for offshore oil," said Susan Farady, director of the Marine Affairs Institute at Roger Williams University School of Law. She said there's been more than 800 offshore explosions and fires in the Gulf since 2001 and 55 deaths.

Others say Mariner's incident further underscores the need for the government's six-month moratorium on deepwater exploration, which is due to lift by December, but which has shutdown deepwater exploration in the Gulf, and much of the shallow water operations, too, since April.

"It's another reminder that drilling accidents happen all too frequently," said Oceana senior campaign director Jacqueline Savitz.

Mariner's safety record in the Gulf, based on federal fines, has been largely unnoteworthy. Last year, it was fined $55,000 for two incidents in the Gulf of Mexico, records from the former Minerals Management Service indicate. In one, it was fined $20,000 because a helicopter platform was taken out of service due to a fire. In another, it was fined $35,000 after an inspectors cited it for lacking adequate contingency plans for an operation.

Police worked through the night searching the complex at Colesville Road and Georgia Avenue, trying to determine whether two backpacks and two boxes that seemed to have been carried into the building by the gunman, who has been identified as James J. Lee also were bombs, according to Montgomery County police spokeswoman Angela Cruz.

Nearby Wayne Avenue remained closed to traffic Thursday morning between Ramsey Avenue and Georgia Avenue, Cruz said. Pedestrian access was restricted on the sidewalks on the Georgia and Wayne avenue sides of the Discovery building.

Lee, 43, held three men hostage -- a security guard and two other employees -- and forced them to lie face down on the floor, Montgomery County Police Chief J. Thomas Manger said. He had a handgun and what Manger described as a live bomb strapped to him.

Police have not publicly named Lee, but several local and federal law enforcement sources identified him as the gunman.

Apart from Lee, nobody was injured during the dramatic episode, and the names of the hostages were not released. But The Washington Blade reported that one of the captives was Christopher Wood, a former employee. He was in charge of marketing, the Blade's editor, Kevin Naff, said Thursday morning.

"He's a great guy. Kind, generous, hardworking. Everybody in the office kind of gravitated toward him," Naff said.

Naff said he received an e-mail from Wood Thursday morning, which he took as a good sign that Wood is engaging with people after the ordeal.

On its blog, Discovery released a statement from hostage and employee Jim McNulty. In it, McNulty thanks police and public safety workers, as well as Discovery officials, "for helping to get me and my fellow hostages out safely.

"I want to thank my family, friends and coworkers for their thoughts and prayers during this situation," the blog post continues. "... I thank you for all for your concern during these harrowing hours."

Lee was killed at 4:48 p.m., nearly three hours after he stalked into the building with a handgun, took three hostages and later pointed his gun at one of them, said Manger.

An environmental militant, Lee held a grudge against Discovery, viewing the network as a purveyor of ideas he considered environmentally destructive and staging protests outside its headquarters, according to authorities and court records.

Patricia Neal, Tony- and Oscar-winning actress, dies at 84

Patricia-nealActress Patricia Neal, who won an Oscar for her turn in "Hud" with Paul Newman, died Sunday at home in Edgartown, Mass.

Neal, who was famously involved with a married Gary Cooper, and married to and divorced from writerRoald Dahl, succumbed to lung cancer. She'd also dealt for decades with the effects of three strokes that hit her in 1965.

Her career started in New York theater in the 1940s, when she won a handful of awards, including a Tony, for her turn in Lillian Hellman's "Another Part of the Forest." She signed with Warner Bros. and moved to Hollywood, but the hot period of her film career lasted only a few years. Two of her nine films at that time were with Cooper, of whom Neal wrote in her 1988 autobiography, "He is one of the most beautiful things that ever happened to me in my life. I love him even now."

Neal also made one film with a pre-presidential Ronald Reagan, in 1949. "He was a pleasant fellow," she said later. "We had adjoining suites and dined together each evening, but he never made a pass at me, dash it all."

For more on Neal's life, including her 1952 marriage to Dahl, the tragedies that struck two of her five children with him, and her journey back to acting after her strokes, read The Times' full obituary.

2008 NFL Pom Profiles Photos Lilly Robbins

Lilly Robbins
Age: 20 • Miami Dolphins

When a team is losing, sometimes the cheer leaders will still chant, “We’re number one!” Do you condone lying?
Yes, I think it’s OK. We’re there for the fans, to help them get their spirits up. When we’re losing, you can’t be in a frustrated mood, because we’re the ones helping pick them up, telling them that we can come back. We’re the team’s number one fans, so they have to rely on us to keep everyone motivated and optimistic.

What about your fans? Got any crazy ones?
We’ve got these two guys, and they just have every calendar and every picture we’ve ever done. I don’t care if you took a picture with me my rookie year at some random appearance, they have it. And they’ll have it laminated, so that they can pull it out and have you sign it. They carry around all the old calendars in case a former cheerleader is there. They’re harmless, but it’s almost like they want to be us.

Yikes.
I had a guy ask me for one of the girl’s game-worn socks.

Do you have a day job?
I’m a full-time student studying sports broadcasting. I’m going to a community college right now. I have one semester left, and then I’ll hopefully be at FAU [Florida Atlantic University] in the spring. I want to be an interviewer on the sidelines.

Though by almost any standard Michael Crabtree had a fantastic rookie season, there will always be a sense of "what if" about what the former Texas Tech Red Raider could have done in 2009.

What if he hadn't missed all of training camp and the first six weeks of the season?

What if he had the time to build chemistry with Alex Smith and the rest of the receiving corps?

What if he had learned the nuances of Jimmy Raye's offense before having to prove himself on the fly in regular season game action?

While we'll never know the answers to these questions, we will be able to see a preview of just how great Crabtree can be as he enters his first NFL preseason. His reps may be limited, but if the 49ers hope to finally meet franchise expectations, Crabtree and Smith will need to gel early on

Park Ride Victim's Father: "She Was Dead"

  • Play CBS Video Video Amusement Park Tragedy

A 12-year-old girl plunged 100 feet from an amusement park ride when the safety net failed. Ben Tracy reports.

(CBS) A 12-year-old Florida girl is in critical but stable condition after falling more than 100 feet in an amusement park ride in Wisconsin. A safety net did not catch her.

Last Friday, Teagan Marti was looking for a thrill when she signed up for "Terminal Velocity," a freefall ride at Extreme World in Wisconsin Dells.

Teagan told her parents she wanted to do it after seeing the ride on a Travel Channel show. A person is raised to the top of a platform and then unhooked, free-falling at up to 52 miles per hour before, as the ride is designed, hitting the safety net below.

When Teagan was released, police say, the landing net was still fully on the ground. So when she hit, it did not break her fall.

The ride operator released the girl before the net was in place. In a statement to CBS News, the park said the accident was "caused by human error" and the ride operator is on "leave for mental health reasons."

Teagan is in a Wisconsin hospital with 10 fractures in her back and one in her skull. She has yet to speak.

Dr. Alex Marti, Teagan's father, was the first to see his daughter after her fall. He said on "The Early Show" Tuesday, "She was dead."

He explained, "She was basically unconscious, not moving and laying flat on her back with blood coming out of her ears and nose. Just a horrible, horrible scene. At the moment she fell and I heard that loud thud, I just assumed she was dead."

Stuart Grossman, attorney for Teagan Marti and her family, told CBS News that Dr. Marti, a radiologist, performed CPR and brought her back to life.

CBS News correspondent Ben Tracy reported the ride did have an age limit. You are supposed to be 14, but 12-year-old Teagan had a signed form of parental consent to get on the ride.

Alex Marti, whose family lives near Fort Lauderdale, Fla., said the trip was part of vacation fun for his daughter.

He said, "I figured that it would be safe and be fine to do. ... I watched several people before her. ... I saw several times that it was being done and it looked like everything was organized and done well."

He added, "Except in this case, the platform went up and never reached the top, and we were waiting for it to go to the top, and they were trying to lift the net below and before -- the net was still on the ground, and all of a sudden, she's released from the bucket. And she falls 100 feet directly to the ground. To me, it's just impossible to imagine that something like that could happen."

So who is at fault?

Grossman said, "(The person to blame is) the person who released Teagan early before this had reached its safe height and who didn't bother to check to see if the nets that were going to catch her were in place."

Grossman added, "The fact that you could release a rider prematurely tells you that there must be some design defect that could cause or allow that to happen. There was no failsafe method."

Grossman said there was "no backup" or "no safety net in place."

"This fellow had to make a conscious move to release Teagan," he said. "You can't just do it inadvertently. It has to be a conscious move. I'm curious as to the issues that he's faced with. So we'll see."

The park where Teagan was injured is temporarily closed. Officials say it's cooperating with the police investigation.

Tracy added there is video of Teague's accident, but police haven't released it ywt.

Overall, amusement parks have a pretty good safety record, Tracy points out. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission estimates that more than 270 million people visit American amusement parks each year. About 7,000 are treated in emergency rooms for injuries from ride accidents. An average of four people die.

Ride safety experts such as Ken Martin say you shouldn't assume all rides are safe. Martin told CBS News, "Watch the ride, ask questions, make sure the ride operator is paying attention. Make sure other rides are behaving themselves."

Yahoo Marries Google in Japan

Hold onto your mouse, and make sure your keyboard is stable!

Yahoo announced today that it will use Google technology to power its Yahoo Japan search engine and ad delivery system.

This was attempted before in the US until the government squashed Yahoo’s efforts because of fears over a search monopoly.

But regulators in Japan do not share the same fear factor.

According to HuffPost, the decision by Yahoo Japan, which is largely independent from its California namesake, will mean that the bulk of Internet searches done in Japan will use Google’s search engine, though both companies said enough independence would be maintained to keep the market competitive.

Yahoo is making every effort to find a way to recover in the hyper competitive search market.

I guess Yahoo’s perspective is, if you can’t beat em’, then join em’!

Actually, this is probably a smart move by Yahoo because of their new commitment to focusing on high quality news and content delivery – which Yahoo excels at doing.

Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) shares are up +3.51 (0.72%) at 491.81 on the news of the Yahoo Japan deal.

llinois office workers watch pieces falling off hovering daylight UFO

A group of Illinois office workers observed a "copper colored, brightly flashing" object that hovered in the daytime sky while "smaller pieces appeared to be breaking away and falling rapidly" to the ground on July 16, 2010, according to testimony from the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) witness reporting database.

"It was much brighter than anything I have ever seen in the day light which is what drew my attention," the reporting witness stated.

A group of workers assembled outside the building where the object had ascended higher in the sky, but was directly overhead.

"In a completely cloudless crystal blue background there was no reference for the altitude or size of the object."

At this point, the group reports that pieces of the object began to fall off to the ground
After 10 or 15 minutes, the witness reports that the object itself began falling toward the ground.

"You could almost see a tumbling type effect and it began to get substantially larger."

One of the witnesses got into a vehicle in an attempt to locate where the object came down, but was unsuccessful.

The group was also unable to agree on a consistent shape of the object. "As earlier stated, it first appeared oblong, and seemed to change. I believe we were probably seeing it from different angles."

The Illinois city was not named in the public portion of the MUFON report. No images were submitted with the report that was filed on July 17, 2010.

The following is the unedited and as yet uninvestigated report filed with MUFON. Please keep in mind that most UFO reports can be explained as something natural or manmade. If Illinois MUFON State Director Sam Maranto investigates and reports back on this case, I will release an update.

IL, July 16, 2010 - I saw a very bright object out of my office window. Myself and four co workers ran outside and oserved for fifteen minutes. MUFON Case # 24592.

At approximately 3p.m. out of my Southeast facing office window I observed a copper colored brightly flashing object larger than a planet and slightly elongated moving into the top of a line of pine trees.

It was much brighter than anything I have ever seen in the day light which is what drew my attention.

The object moved laterally to my left behind the tree tops, emerged on the other side, and began a slow vertical ascent. I pointed this out to several co workers.

My boss also took note of this as a very unusual looking object. He hurried outside to get a closer look, and I followed shortly.

When I arrived in front of the building in addition to my boss, were two other co workers who were out smoking at the time. All four of us were now oberving the strange object in braod day light. It was not like anything any of us have ever seen.

In the time it took me to go downstairs and outside, it had risen higher into the sky and was now almost directly over head. In a completely cloudless crystal blue background there was no reference for the altitude or size of the object.

Smaller pieces appeared to be breaking away and falling rapidly.

This effect was noticed at least three different times. After approximately ten or fifteen minutes of maintaining a relatively stationery position, it appeared to begin falling. You could almost see a tumbling type effect and it began to get substantially larger.

At this point I made a run for my phone with the intention of getting a picture. I told another friend of mine in the office about it on the way to my desk. He headed outside while I found my phone. By the time I came back the object had fallen below the tree line although the fifth witness did observe the object before it went out of sight.

My boss actually jumped in his car and took off in attempt to locate the point of impact. It is tough to estimate how near or far this may have been without the ability to get a feel for the altitude. There is also no way of knowing if the object was purely reflecting light, or giving off it's own. It was remarkably bright in the light of day, and at no point did it ever go completely dim the way an airplane does when its angle in relation to the sun changes.

It also lacked a consistent shape. As earlier stated, it first appeared oblong, and seemed to change. I believe we were probably seeing it from different angles. I have not seen any local news coverage so far, and was hoping you have encountered similar reports. I would love an explanation of what this may have been!!

'Glee,' 'The Pacific' lead in Emmy nominations; 'Tonight Show' passed over

Washington Post Staff Writer
Thursday, July 8, 2010; 10:33 AM

NBC got a big smack in the kisser Thursday morning when the TV Academy snubbed the triumphant return of "Tonight Show with Jay Leno" as it unveiled this year's list of Emmy nominees, but fawned over "Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien" with a nom in the best variety program derby.

On the bright side for the peacock network, CBS's "Late Show with David Letterman" got shut out, too.

But broadcast TV overall got a big shot in the arm in the trophy competition, which has increasingly become a celebration of all things cable TV.

Fox's perky new high school musical comedy series "Glee" nabbed the most nominations of any series -- 19 -- including entries for Broadway emigres Lea Michele and Matthew Morrison, who each earned best lead acting nods to complement the best comedy series nomination.

In that wider race Glee goes up against ABC's freshman mocumentary comedy "Modern Family" which walked off with 14 noms, including a whopping five for best supporting thespians. The show's expansive ensemble decided collectively to throw their names in the ring as supporters -- not leads. The noms included cast members Ty Burrell, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Eric Stonestreet, as well as Sofia Vergara and Julie Bowen. Show patriarch Ed O'Neill got snubbed, which is nothing new -- the academy ignored him every year he starred in "Married . . . with Children."

"Glee's" 19-nomination tally does not break the record of 22 noms in a single year set by NBC's "30 Rock" last year. ("30 Rock" nabbed 15 nominations Thursday morning.)

It's safe to go out on the streets: The academy has placated rabid "Lost" fans by giving ABC's canceled cult drama an impressive 12 nominations, including one for best drama series -- a derby in which "Lost" hasn't seen any action in since its first season, when it won that statuette.

In its third decade on the air, "Saturday Night Live" finally became the most nominated program in TV history with a lifetime tally of 126 nominations -- two more than former record holder "ER." "SNL" accomplished this by nabbing another 12 noms at the early morning nomination announcement ceremony at TV academy HQ in North Hollywood. And yes, the NBC late night show has Betty White to thank, she having received one of those 12 noms. Even better, she'll battle Tina Fey, former "SNL" head writer, for best guest host.
The academy abandoned its long-held No Fangs policy to nominate HBO's vampire drama "True Blood" for best drama series, joining "Lost." And, speaking of breakthroughs, CBS actually got shown full respect for its freshman drama "The Good Wife," which was one of few new drama series to break out last season. That includes a nom for best drama, one for star Julianna Margulies, one for supporting actor/louse-of-a-TV-husband Chris Noth, and one for best writing.

All this love for new programming is not to say this year's Emmy broadcast -- moved to August to accommodate NFL football on this year's broadcaster NBC -- won't necessarily be a rerun of last year's (which, in turn was a repeat of the year before).

Three-time best-comedy winner "30 Rock" has been once again nominated in that derby; two-time winner "Mad Men" is up again for best drama series. "Amazing Race," which has had a death grip on the best reality competition series since the category was created, is up again in that race. And Conan's "Tonight Show" faces Comedy Central's "The Daily Show," which has won the best variety show competition the past seven years running. Meanwhile, "30 Rock's" Alec Baldwin, AMC's "Breaking Bad" meth-cooking high school teacher Bryan Cranston, and FX's "Damages" harridan Glenn Close -- all of whom snared their second consecutive best-acting wins last year -- are up again in their respective categories: best comedy actor, drama actor and drama actress.

"Glee" and "Modern Family" face not only "30 Rock" but HBO's "Curb Your Enthusiasm," Showtime's "Nurse Jackie" and NBC's "The Office" in the best comedy race.

Meanwhile, "True Blood," "Lost," and "The Good Wife" make strange bedfellows in the drama series race that also includes AMC's "Breaking Bad" and last year's winner "Mad Men," as well as Showtime's "Dexter."

This year's most nominated program? HBO's World War II epic "The Pacific," produced by Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks, with a whopping 24 noms. That, however, does not set a record. The aged miniseries "Roots" still holds that one, with 37 noms.

Chain-Smoking Indonesian Tot Continues His Habit On Camera (VIDEO)

Though his parents previously vowed to get help, 2-year-old Aldi Suganda Rizal -- the Indonesian toddler who caused a sensation in May when video footage of him smoking a cigarette turned up online -- continues to indulge his nicotine habit.

CBS reporters tracked Aldi and his parents down in a tiny fishing village on the island of Sumatra. As if on cue, Aldi appeared, cigarette in hand, alongside his mother, Diana. The new footage is perhaps even more disturbing than the original clip. In several shots, the toddler -- said to have started smoking at just 11 months -- uses one already lit cigarette to light another.

"If he can really quit smoking, he will definitely be a very healthy boy," Diana says. She noted her son is currently enrolled in a government-sponsored rehabilitation program, but continues to throw tantrums and even vomit when he can't smoke. "I can't stand seeing him hurting himself. What can we do but accept it as it is?"

Authorities have called Aldi "a victim of his environment," as Indonesia is the only country in the Asia-Pacific region that has yet to ratify the World Health Organization's framework on tobacco control.
