New College first-year dies in sledding accident

SARASOTA - A New College of Florida student died Saturday morning from injuries sustained in a sledding accident in her hometown of New Castle, Indiana.

Freshman Jessica Wantz, 19, was taken to an Indianapolis hospital Friday night after she crashed into a structure while sledding in a New Castle park with her boyfriend, according to the Associated Press.

She was pronounced dead Saturday morning.

New College President Gordon Michalson learned of Wantz' death Saturday night.

"This is tragic beyond belief," he said. "This is the very worse thing that can happen at any college, especially a small college."Jessica Wantz

Michalson said he would reach out to the teenager's family and any campus reaction would be based on the family's wishes.

A Facebook group in Wantz' memory formed about 1 p.m. Saturday and garnered nearly 500 members in only six hours. Many left messages filled with memories of Wantz and prayers for her.

Her Facebook profile indicates she has a brother and had been in a relationship with James Bowling.

Bowling's tribute reads, in part: "Jessica, you were the most beautiful soul i've ever met. i know your in a beter place now and i hope your saving me a spot up there next to you when my time comes. i miss you so much and i feel so guilty for what happened."
