American Idiot Musical: Based on Green Day’s album

Viewers were given a little taste of the new musical “American Idiot” at last night’s Grammy Awards ceremony, when the show’s cast joined up with Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong for a performance of the Green Day single “21 Guns.”

“American Idiot” features the music of rock band Green Day, and is based on the band’s 2004 album of the same name. The “American Idiot” musical itself focuses on three young male friends whose lives take decidedly different directions.

According to theimproper.com, the show will be moving to the St. James Theater on Broadway this spring, just in time to be eligible for the 2010 Tony Awards. It’s scheduled to start its preview performances on 24th March, and then opens on April 20th.

The show focuses on the themes of war, love and loss and is said to include tracks from Green Day’s “American Idiot” album, as well as songs from their “21st Century Breakdown” album. It will also feature a never-released track that’s called “When It’s Time.”

Did you watch the performance last night?
