The first day of the new year brings the 121st Tournament of Roses Parade (ABC, NBC, HGTV, Univision, RFD TV, 11 a.m.), the colorful event in Pasadena which may play on more networks than any other march down the street. This one is different, though: Its floats are all made of flowers or organic material, the colors and detail especially pop on HD.
It all leads to the Rose Bowl (ABC, 5 p.m.) pitting Oregon vs. Ohio State, one of a handful of bowl games that also include Northwestern vs. Auburn in the Outback Bowl (ESPN, 11 a.m.), Penn State vs LSU in the Capital One Bowl (ABC, 1 p.m.), West VIrginia vs. Florida State in the Gator Bowl (CBS, 1 p.m.) and Florida vs. Cincinnati in the Sugar Bowl (Fox, 8:30 p.m.).
What better day to take in the movie "2010" (TCM, 9 p.m.), the lesser known sequel to "2001" released in 1984 with Roy Schieder, John Lithgow and Keir Dullea. It accompanies two other movies about the near future, "Fahrenheit 451" (TCM, 10 p.m.), released in 1966 (though a remake is planned for release in 2012), AND 1975's "Rollerball" (TCM, midnight), with James Caan, which supposedly takes place in 2018.
