Justin Mentell, 27, who played attorney Garrett Wells on ABC's "Boston Legal" during the 2005 season, died Monday, Feb. 1 in Wisconsin.
A sheriff's deputy says that it appears that Mentell's Jeep drove off the side of the road in the early hours of the morning, struck two trees and Mentell, who was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, was thrown from the vehicle and down a steep embankment.
Authorities were notified when a local farmer drove by and spotted the wreckage.
"It looks like he had been there for several hours," Chief Deputy John Pepper says. "There are a lot of trees in that area, so if you were driving on 39, you wouldn't be able to see the vehicle. The farmer was traveling on Moscow Road after the sun came up, and he saw the Jeep in a field."
Mentell had recently moved back to Waukegan, Illinois, where he grew up, from Los Angeles.
His other credits include the movies "Roll Bounce" and last year's "G-Force.
