jersey shore season 2 episode 2
It's time for another round of "Jersey Shore by the Numbers," wherein we combine demented statistical analysis with an utter lack of PowerPoint skills in an attempt to get inside the heads of our favorite tough-talking yet oddly sweet-natured reality stars.
Thursday's (August 5) show was chock full of professions of love, references to breasts, and boasts about swapping spit with two ladies at once. Snooki talked pickles, Ronnie referenced "Saved by the Bell," and not a single person spoke the words "gym," "tan" or "laundry." And so, once again, we turn to a mathematical assessment of the kid's favorite words and phrases so that we might uncover the gritty truths of "Jersey Shore."

Patricia Neal, Tony- and Oscar-winning actress, dies at 84
Actress Patricia Neal, who won an Oscar for her turn in "Hud" with Paul Newman, died Sunday at home in Edgartown, Mass.
Neal, who was famously involved with a married Gary Cooper, and married to and divorced from writerRoald Dahl, succumbed to lung cancer. She'd also dealt for decades with the effects of three strokes that hit her in 1965.
Her career started in New York theater in the 1940s, when she won a handful of awards, including a Tony, for her turn in Lillian Hellman's "Another Part of the Forest." She signed with Warner Bros. and moved to Hollywood, but the hot period of her film career lasted only a few years. Two of her nine films at that time were with Cooper, of whom Neal wrote in her 1988 autobiography, "He is one of the most beautiful things that ever happened to me in my life. I love him even now."
Neal also made one film with a pre-presidential Ronald Reagan, in 1949. "He was a pleasant fellow," she said later. "We had adjoining suites and dined together each evening, but he never made a pass at me, dash it all."
For more on Neal's life, including her 1952 marriage to Dahl, the tragedies that struck two of her five children with him, and her journey back to acting after her strokes, read The Times' full obituary.

"True Blood" Season 3, Episode 9: "Night On The Sun"
Bill is full of remorse and tells Sookie that he couldn't stop from feeding on her because he had been starved, but Sookie says she doesn't know if she can ever forgive him.
Bill says he doesn't want to be forgiven. It's pretty heartbreaking to watch with Bill confiding in Sookie that she deserves to live a full life out of the dark. They both ultimately break up.
Talbot isn't too happy when Sophie-Anne and her team of animals move into Russell Edgington's home, especially after he was up half the night burying werewolves under the gazebo and trying to get bloodstains out of the bed sheets.
Russell lets Talbot know that he killed Magister, and when Talbot starts to panic, Russell tells him it will be fine and he sent a huge check to the vampire rights group fighting for a vampire rights amendment.
Eric, who still has the same blood-stained light blue sweater, interrupts to tell Russell that Debbie Pelt is in his study: "They killed my Cooter!" Debbie says. Russell gives her his permission to go after Sookie, though when Eric questions the wisdom of this, Russell questions Eric's loyalty. Eric seethes that he's been looking for Russell for a thousand years.
Meanwhile, Debbie and Sookie are still going at it in the bedroom. Sookie somehow manages to cut up her face with a pair of scissors, then grabs a shotgun.
Back upstairs, Sookie blows a hole in the wall next to Debbie and warns her that next time, she won't miss. Debbie leaves; Bill rushes upstairs and they embrace. Bill whispers apologies in between kisses. At the end we see Hoyt driving home and pan to Jessica in the woods, feeding on the dead werewolves. Back upstairs in Sookie's house, both Bill and Sookie have reunited in their romance.

Yes, I think it’s OK. We’re there for the fans, to help them get their spirits up. When we’re losing, you can’t be in a frustrated mood, because we’re the ones helping pick them up, telling them that we can come back. We’re the team’s number one fans, so they have to rely on us to keep everyone motivated and optimistic.
What about your fans? Got any crazy ones?
We’ve got these two guys, and they just have every calendar and every picture we’ve ever done. I don’t care if you took a picture with me my rookie year at some random appearance, they have it. And they’ll have it laminated, so that they can pull it out and have you sign it. They carry around all the old calendars in case a former cheerleader is there. They’re harmless, but it’s almost like they want to be us.
Yikes.
I had a guy ask me for one of the girl’s game-worn socks.
Do you have a day job?
I’m a full-time student studying sports broadcasting. I’m going to a community college right now. I have one semester left, and then I’ll hopefully be at FAU [Florida Atlantic University] in the spring. I want to be an interviewer on the sidelines.

Though by almost any standard Michael Crabtree had a fantastic rookie season, there will always be a sense of "what if" about what the former Texas Tech Red Raider could have done in 2009.
What if he hadn't missed all of training camp and the first six weeks of the season?
What if he had the time to build chemistry with Alex Smith and the rest of the receiving corps?
What if he had learned the nuances of Jimmy Raye's offense before having to prove himself on the fly in regular season game action?
While we'll never know the answers to these questions, we will be able to see a preview of just how great Crabtree can be as he enters his first NFL preseason. His reps may be limited, but if the 49ers hope to finally meet franchise expectations, Crabtree and Smith will need to gel early on
NFL Preseason Schedule 2010: 10 Games To Watch
While most NFL fans view the preseason as a necessary, if sometimes pointless exercise in playing meaningless games and dodging avoidable injuries, the preseason is hugely important for rookies and fringe players in cementing their statuses on their respective rosters.
With the 2010 NFL season officially kicking off at Sunday night's Hall of Fame game, which features the new-look Cincinnati Bengals and the Dallas Cowboys, it's time to take a look at which preseason games will have the largest affect on how the regular season plays out.
Whether it's the arrival of a new player or coach, or a marking point of a possible injury return or contract holdout coming to a close, be sure to check out these ten games this August
ufc 117 post fight press conference
Knockout of the Night went to Stefan Struve, who survived a disastrous first round against Christian Morecraft to score a come-from-behind TKO victory early in th
Below, check out more news and notes to come out of Saturday night's post-fight UFC 117 press conference:
- Dana White is still none too pleased with the fact that Thiago Alves missed weight by a half a pound for his fight with Jon Fitch. White repeatedly said that Alves, who didn't even attempt to cut the extra weight in the time allotted to him after the initial weigh-in, needs to go up to middleweight. White said he told Alves as much when they talked via text message after the fight:
"He said, 'I'm sorry about that. I'll come back stronger.' I said, 'Yeah, at 185 you will.' ...He looked lethargic tonight, he looked slow. He doesn't belong at 170. He belongs at 185 pounds. I feel that way. I know Joe Silva feels that way. That's where I'd like to see him, at 185."
When asked if Alves would have been awarded the title shot with a victory after failing to make weight, White responded, "Probably not."
- When pressed on his future plans and whether he'll feel conflicted when his teammate Josh Koscheck fights for the welterweight belt later this year, Jon Fitch claimed that he had not and could not think beyond his impending nuptials:
"The only thing on my mind right now is I'm getting married in three weeks. ...Talk to me after September 4."
Naturally, White chose to interpret this as a sign that Fitch might be open to fighting Koscheck, should Koscheck take the belt from Georges St. Pierre:
"What I believe of Jon Fitch and what I know of Josh Koscheck, I think both these guys have the desire, the heart, and the spirit to take this fight."
Fitch offered no response, aside from a slightly incredulous look in White's direction.
- Though he's riding a three-fight win streak after choking out Ricardo Almeida, former champ Matt Hughes was non-committal about his future in the UFC, saying he'd take the fall off to enjoy some hunting and would "talk with the UFC and figure out what we're going to do" some time in early 2011.
Of the choke that put Almeida out, Hughes said it was something he used often in his college wrestling days: "I could get people to go unconscious back then, so it's something I've always been good at."
White added, "Chuck Liddell came up to me afterwards and said he used to see that in wrestling and it was completely illegal because you couldn't choke people out. He said only a moose like Hughes could pull that one off."
- After his strong – and sometimes baffling – pre-fight remarks, Chael Sonnen stated in no uncertain terms that he had no regrets about the way he had conducted himself:
"I don't apologize for anything, I never did, and if I ever backed off from my stance I would send myself a pink slip and move on in life. I have one goal, it's to be the world champion, and I'm not backing off that goal because of tonight's decision. ...I'm not Dog the Bounty Hunter. I don't issue apologies and you're not going to be the first to get one out of me."
When asked if he regretted his decision not to try and stall for the last remaining minutes of the fight, Sonnen said he didn't completely realize how close the fight was to being over when he was submitted:
"He hit me real hard a couple times. He kicked me real hard a couple times. You're just in the middle of a fistfight on a Saturday night. There's not a lot of thinking. A lot of people like to talk about strategy and thinking and blah, blah, blah. It's a fistfight in the middle of Oakland, California in a steel cage."
- As for Anderson Silva, his mind was with his family after the dramatic come-from-behind victory:
"The one thing I was thinking about, I was thinking about my home. I was thinking about my kids, my family, my wife. I haven't seen them in three months. I was thinking about my grandmother who passed away three weeks ago. I was thinking about my family and I couldn't wait to get back home to see them."
- The sudden finish to his bout with Rafael dos Anjos came as something of a surprise to Clay Guida, who was unaware that the Brazilian was suffering from an injured jaw:
"I was a little confused too. I was putting pressure on that shoulder in his jaw against the cage, and he tapped. I didn't know if he thought I was doing something illegal."
- And finally, on the issue of a potential rematch with Silva, Sonnen made his intentions as clear as possible as the presser came to a close:

Birthers Deny It's Obama's Birthday 49 Year
NAIROBI (The Borowitz Report) - President Barack Obama celebrated turning 49 years of age today amid a growing controversy from members of the so-called "Birther" movement who claim that today is not actually his birthday.
"Mr. Obama wants us to believe that today is his birthday, but since he won't provide his birth certificate, we're not going to take his word for it," said Orly Taitz, a leading Birther.
Speaking at a press conference in Nairobi, Kenya, Ms. Taitz said that she had traveled "to the land of the President's birth" to find his original birth certificate, but to no avail.
"Unfortunately, the tribal shaman in the President's village didn't keep very good records," she said. "It's probably hidden away in a mud hut somewhere.Obama Birthday on 4 Augest

Michigan Election Results Mean End of Kilpatrick Era
Kwame Kilpatrick, of course, was mayor of Detroit until 2008, when he resigned amid a series of scandals. He ultimately went to jail for violating probation in May. (He has since been indicted on 19 counts of fraud and tax evasion.) His mother was dogged by questions about her son on the campaign trail, with NPR noting that "at almost every news event" she held, "the first questions center less on her work than on allegations her son faces."
Clarke, stating that "the image of the region is tainted by Detroit's reputation of being represented by arrogant, corrupt, self-serving politicians," stressed that he "can change the image so that we have a fresher one that'll attract jobs and investment here."
The Kilpatrick loss wasn't the only interesting race in Michigan last night: Rick Snyder, a former Gateway executive who cast himself as "one tough nerd," won the GOP nomination for governor, defeating more established politicians Attorney General Mike Cox and Rep. Pete Hoekstra in the process.
Snyder was the most moderate GOP candidate, and also the one with the most outsider credibility - suggesting that voters in Michigan may have been more concerned with electing someone lacking Washington connections than a candidate making a play for the far reaches of the right. The self-financed Snyder stressed the economy, not social issues.
He'll face off in November against Democrat Virg Bernero, the mayor of Lansing, in the race to replace term-limited Democratic Gov. Jennifer Granholm.
Park Ride Victim's Father: "She Was Dead"
- Play CBS Video Video Amusement Park Tragedy
A 12-year-old girl plunged 100 feet from an amusement park ride when the safety net failed. Ben Tracy reports.
-
A representation of how Teague Marti fell from "Terminal Velocity" 100 feet straight to the ground. The safety net was not in place before she was released from the ride. (CBS)
Last Friday, Teagan Marti was looking for a thrill when she signed up for "Terminal Velocity," a freefall ride at Extreme World in Wisconsin Dells.
Teagan told her parents she wanted to do it after seeing the ride on a Travel Channel show. A person is raised to the top of a platform and then unhooked, free-falling at up to 52 miles per hour before, as the ride is designed, hitting the safety net below.
When Teagan was released, police say, the landing net was still fully on the ground. So when she hit, it did not break her fall.
The ride operator released the girl before the net was in place. In a statement to CBS News, the park said the accident was "caused by human error" and the ride operator is on "leave for mental health reasons."
Teagan is in a Wisconsin hospital with 10 fractures in her back and one in her skull. She has yet to speak.
Dr. Alex Marti, Teagan's father, was the first to see his daughter after her fall. He said on "The Early Show" Tuesday, "She was dead."
He explained, "She was basically unconscious, not moving and laying flat on her back with blood coming out of her ears and nose. Just a horrible, horrible scene. At the moment she fell and I heard that loud thud, I just assumed she was dead."
Stuart Grossman, attorney for Teagan Marti and her family, told CBS News that Dr. Marti, a radiologist, performed CPR and brought her back to life.
CBS News correspondent Ben Tracy reported the ride did have an age limit. You are supposed to be 14, but 12-year-old Teagan had a signed form of parental consent to get on the ride.
Alex Marti, whose family lives near Fort Lauderdale, Fla., said the trip was part of vacation fun for his daughter.
He said, "I figured that it would be safe and be fine to do. ... I watched several people before her. ... I saw several times that it was being done and it looked like everything was organized and done well."
He added, "Except in this case, the platform went up and never reached the top, and we were waiting for it to go to the top, and they were trying to lift the net below and before -- the net was still on the ground, and all of a sudden, she's released from the bucket. And she falls 100 feet directly to the ground. To me, it's just impossible to imagine that something like that could happen."
So who is at fault?
Grossman said, "(The person to blame is) the person who released Teagan early before this had reached its safe height and who didn't bother to check to see if the nets that were going to catch her were in place."
Grossman added, "The fact that you could release a rider prematurely tells you that there must be some design defect that could cause or allow that to happen. There was no failsafe method."
Grossman said there was "no backup" or "no safety net in place."
"This fellow had to make a conscious move to release Teagan," he said. "You can't just do it inadvertently. It has to be a conscious move. I'm curious as to the issues that he's faced with. So we'll see."
The park where Teagan was injured is temporarily closed. Officials say it's cooperating with the police investigation.
Tracy added there is video of Teague's accident, but police haven't released it ywt.
Overall, amusement parks have a pretty good safety record, Tracy points out. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission estimates that more than 270 million people visit American amusement parks each year. About 7,000 are treated in emergency rooms for injuries from ride accidents. An average of four people die.
Ride safety experts such as Ken Martin say you shouldn't assume all rides are safe. Martin told CBS News, "Watch the ride, ask questions, make sure the ride operator is paying attention. Make sure other rides are behaving themselves."
Beware These Dietary Supplements

CBS News Medical Correspondent Dr. Jennifer Ashton offers information and insight on pressing medical matters.
But a new Consumer Reports investigation reveals what the magazine calls the "dirty dozen" of dietary supplements - ones that may harm your health, and that you should consider avoiding.
12 Supplements You Should Avoid
On "The Early Show" Tuesday, CBS News Medical Correspondent Dr. Jennifer Ashton discussed several. Some might even kill you, research, the magazine and the government warn.

WEIGHT LOSS SUPPLEMENTS
Chaparral
Bitter Orange
Country Mallow
Chaparral, which is marketed for weight loss as well as colds and detoxification, could cause liver damage or kidney problems. This is likely unsafe and the Food and Drug Administration advises people not to take it. Bitter orange and country mallow both could pose possible risks to your heart -- they have been linked to heart attack, stroke and even death.
KAVA KAVA
Kava kava, which is promoted to ease anxiety or menopause, has been linked to possible liver damage. In 2002, the FDA released a consumer advisory notice about the potential risks. According to the FDA, kava-containing products have been associated with hepatitis, cirrhosis, and liver failure. There have been more than 25 reports of adverse events in other countries -- and at least four patients required liver transplants. It has been banned in Germany, Canada and Switzerland. However, it's still on shelves in the United States. "People should not take this," Ashton said on "The Early Show," "and they should look carefully at the ingredients of any supplement they're taking to see if that could be in it."
How are supplements regulated in the U.S.?
Dietary supplements are not regulated as strictly as prescription drugs or over-the-counter medications -- supplements can be marketed without having to demonstrate their safety or efficacy. They DO NOT need to get FDA approval before they're sold. If serious adverse events are reported once they're on the market, the FDA can take action. The manufacturers of dietary supplements must record, investigate and forward to FDA any reports they receive of serious adverse events associated with the use of their products that are reported to them directly. But, it's difficult to put together strong enough evidence to order products off the market -- warnings and recalls are utilized more often. We found 10 of the "dirty dozen" supplements in local stores
Not all supplements are dangerous; if you're considering adding one to your health regiment, what's the best way to insure it's safe for you?
Always consult your doctor or pharmacist. Patients often keep them as their "dirty little secrets" and don't 'fess up about using them. A doctor can check to see if there are any drug interactions or problems. Research the claims of what the supplements can do. If it sounds too good to be true, then it probably is. Don't assume that, just because it's being sold as "all natural" or in a health food store, that it's good for you. Lastly, look for the "USP Verified" mark - it means the supplement's quality, purity and potency have been verified by the U.S. Pharmacopeia, a trusted, non-profit organization.
Obama's Birthday: Politics and Fundraising, but no Family
President Obama turned 49 without his family today, his wife and daughter traveling abroad and his other daughter at summer camp. But while the president will celebrate his big day without Michelle, Sasha and Malia, he's got plenty of Americans wishing him well (and both parties using the moment to score political points).
Democrats are rallying their supporters across the country by hosting hundreds of birthday parties in the president's honor. Democrats are also hosting more traditional, big-ticket fundraisers pegged to the president's birthday. Meanwhile, Republicans are sending out "birthday cards" that take jabs at the president's party.
Mr. Obama will go home to Chicago tonight to spend his birthday night in his house in the city's Hyde Park neighborhood. With his family out of town, the president will spend the evening with friends.
Meanwhile, Mr. Obama's supporters will be celebrating his birthday across the country at events coordinated through Organizing for America, the grassroots arm of the Democratic National Committee. Volunteers are being asked to make cakes and submit them to the OFA website. The organization also sent out an e-mail from Michelle Obama asking supporters to sign a "birthday card" for the president.
Tomorrow, the DNC hosts some pricey parties in the president's honor. A party hosted by real estate mogul Neil Bluhm costs $30,400 to attend. Mr. Obama is expected to attend the Chicago event. Tickets for another Obama birthday DNC fundraiser cost $250.
Meanwhile, the Republican National Committee has created the website www.baracksbirthdaycards.com, which features of series of e-cards with all of the Democrats conservatives love to hate, such as House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and scandal-ridden Rep. Charlie Rangel.
The cards feature critical (if predictable) messages; a card with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid's picture, for instance, reads, "Sorry no gift this year. I'm going to need every dime to defend our failed economic policies."
Krystle Campbell Skips Cheerleading Practice for Ryan Howard
WASHINGTON (Politically Illustrated) – Krystle Campbell, who is a cheerleader for the Philadelphia Eagles, upset a number of her peers after skipping practice to spend time with her boyfriend, rehabbing Phillies slugger Ryan Howard in St. Louis.“All our cheerleaders adhere to the same guidelines. No exceptions,” Eagles cheerleader director Barbara Zaun told a Philadelphia newspaper, after voicing frustration about Campbell for missing practice.
According to sources, Campbell did not inform her coaches why she was missing practice, but she will not face discipline action. Cheerleaders are only suppose to miss practice for illness or a family death.
Campbell is also a teacher and was spotted helping Howard to the Rothman Institute at Jefferson Hospital.
Campbell has been an Eagles cheerleader for several years now.
